Daily Devotional

We produce a daily prayer devotional which is given out each week in church.  It has a Psalm, prayer, reading, thought for the day and prayer suggestions for every day of the week.  It normally follows the themes we are looking at in our weekly sermons, but also usually has one reading from one of the saints commemorated by the world wide Church.

Sermons on Line

Missed church on Sunday?  Don’t worry, you can catch up with the sermon by going to our website, www.mccmanchester.co.uk and pressing the sermon button.  This means you don’t miss the weekly teaching designed to help us live as more faithful disciples of the Lord Jesus.

As well as reading the sermon you can now listen to it as a “podcast”.  If you click on the audio download button in the worship section of the navigation bar you will be taken to the relevant page.  You can listen on line or by opposite clicking and saving the file you can listen on your computer or even save to an MP3 player and listen whilst in the car, at the gym or when having a walk.

You can also download the weekly devotional booklet there too.

Borrow A Book

Visit our library and see if there is a book you would like to borrow.  Simply email Andy your choice and pick it up at church on Sunday.  We ask for a donation of £2 per book and a small deposit per book.

WELCOME

Welcome to this newsletter and to the ministry of MCC Manchester.  If this is your first contact with us, know that you are welcome.  You can take part in our ministry through visiting us as we worship each week or by using our resources on our website.  You can keep in touch with us through email, in person or by text.  It is our prayer that our people grow as committed disciples of the Lord Jesus.

TODAY'S SERMON

Today we start a four part sermon series based on the insights into spirituality and morality found in some of Madonna’s songs.  We looked today at her song “like a prayer” and a reading from 1 John which says that we know God by loving.  The song mixes profoundly spiritual and sexual images and lyrics.  We know from our own experience that these two facets of human existence can be wonderful if reconciled or very destructive if they are not.  Andy preached showing that to love another is a way of knowing God; and that our deepest spiritual and erotic yearnings are profoundly linked.

THANKS

Thank you for your generosity last week.  Last week 34 people attended worship and the collection was £68.50 on top of the £1500 or so that is sent by standing order to our bank each month.   62 people attended MCC Manchester at least once in August.

THE REV JANE CLARKE – GUEST PREACHER

Next week we welcome the Rev Jane Clarke as our guest preacher.  Jane has served as the pastor of the MCC in East London for the last 12 years and resigned in the early Summer.  She has now moved to Glasgow, with her partner, Kate, in order to found a MCC congregation there.  It will be good to welcome Jane amongst us and hear of her plans for a new MCC.

TROY PERRY IN SINGAPORE

Our founder, the Rev Troy Perry, was invited to speak to LGBT activists in Singapore who had prepared a PowerPoint presentation of Rev. Perry's life with photos from the pictorial book, "Troy Perry: Pastor and Prophet," including pictures of Troy with Archbishop Desmond Tutu, U.S. President Bill Clinton, U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein, and other religious, political, and social leaders.  However, homosexuality is illegal in Singapore  though the laws are rarely enforced.  The police told Troy he was not allowed to give public speeches; he was allowed, however, answer one-on-one questions.  The organisers of the rally, therefore,  read aloud passages from four books written by Troy: "They used the words from my writings to give me voice and to share my beliefs about human rights for LGBT people," he said.  "But what happened next was simply a stroke of genius," he enthused. The organizers announced that, while I couldn't deliver my public speech, I had been told I could answer one-on-one questions from individuals. So for the next three hours, from 9 PM to midnight, I answered one individual question after another. Of course, I was answering them out loud in front of the audience, so I was actually able to share far more information than if I had only delivered my speech.  There's a saying that when a door closes, God opens a window. That's also true of LGBT activists," said Perry. "When Singapore officials closed a door, Singapore's LGBT activists opened a window." I am so proud of LGBT activists across Singapore and Malaysia. They are working to secure the human rights of LGBT people in their countries and are doing so in the face of great cultural and political opposition," he added.

THIS AND THAT

We planned two new mid week activities for the Autumn.  The first, a mid week homegroup – called an Emmaus Group – starts on 13th September at Margaret and Gwen’s home in Altrincham.  It will meet every other week and the first section of studies will be focused on prayer – using the Lord’s Prayer as a model.  The material comes from the popular Emmaus course which has been designed for use in many different denominations.  Our other mid week activity – a quiet reflective service will start later on in the Autumn after Andy and Ian’s holiday.

ANDY'S MOVEMENTS THIS WEEK

Due to Ian’ operation this week Andy will be working from home; however, he will be visiting hospital a lot.  Please contact Andy, if you need to, via email or the church phone.  He will pick up messages each day.  You can contact Andy via 0161 249 0649 or on his email revandy@mccmanchester.co.uk
