This Week

Quiet and Calm

We meet at 8pm on Tuesday in the side chapel for our monthly Quiet and Calm service.  This is a chance to relax in God’s presence, feel the stress and strain of he day and the week ease away, meet the Lord in a simple celebration of Holy Communion and to be prayed for and anointed with Holy Oil.

Prayer Requests

Did you know you can text and receive prayer requests to us.  All you need to do is to text your prayer request to us at: 07781 472445.  If you wish to receive prayer requests please text and tell us!

Daily Devotional

We produce a daily prayer devotional which is given out each week in church.  It has a Psalm, prayer, reading, thought for the day and prayer suggestions for every day of the week.  It normally follows the themes we are looking at in our weekly sermons, but also usually has one reading from one of the saints commemorated by the world wide Church.

Sermons on Line

Missed church on Sunday?  Don’t worry, you can catch up with the sermon by going to our website, www.mccmanchester.co.uk and pressing the sermon button.  This means you don’t miss the weekly teaching designed to help us live as more faithful disciples of the Lord Jesus.  You can also download the weekly devotional booklet there too.

WELCOME

Welcome to this newsletter and to the ministry of MCC Manchester.  If this is your first contact with us, know that you are welcome.  You can take part in our ministry through visiting us as we worship each week or by using our resources on our website.  You can keep in touch with us through email, in person or by text.  It is our prayer that our people grow as committed disciples of the Lord Jesus.

TODAY'S SERMON

Today Andy looked at Jesus discourse to his disciples where he told them to “love one another as I have loved you”.  In the context of the passage – where He washes their feet and is very direct to Judas – we can see that love is not the same as like.  Love is tough, direct and not afraid to roll up its sleeves in practical service of others.  These should all be hallmarks of our church.

THANKS

Thank you for your generosity last week.  The collection in church came to £108 in addition to the £1400 given to the bank each month.  34 people attended worship.   Our average attendance for Sunday worship in April was been 37 and we have seen over 72 people at least once last month.

QUIET AND CALM SERVICE - TUESDAY

On Tuesday we have our regular Quiet and Calm service at 8pm.  We will hold this in the Side Chapel.  This is an informal celebration of Holy Communion with time for silent prayer, reflection and an opportunity to be anointed and prayed for.  This service is an opportunity to leave aside the hustle and business of the week and spend some quality time in God’s presence.

THIS AND THAT

Thanks to the people who volunteered to help with research on the plight of gay people in Iran; lots of have volunteered and I am just waiting for the final details from Hermione at the Immigration Unit about what we should be looking for.  Please keep Neil in your prayers this week he is applying for a new job in a school in Glossop; it’s a Head of Music Department job but on just four days a week – which will allow him to work part time for us from September as planned.  His interview is on Friday.  Philip has found some interesting statistics from our website.  In April 1,952 people visited our website reading at least 2 pages.  An increasing number of people are visiting to read the sermons.  Some of these are our regulars who want to read a sermon at home having heard it in church (or who have missed the service); but many others seem to be preachers researching for their own sermons.  This page is fulfilling a very powerful ministry task, because it brings people to an encounter with our church who might never approach us via our typical keyword 'hooks' - gay, lesbian, transgender, inclusive, diverse, mcc, etc. The actual content of the sermons will inevitably be full of our church's spiritual DNA. By simply reading through our sermons, visitors will encounter the core messages which underpin our
theology. If some of that content finds its way into someone else's message, so much the better. Having arrived at our site, if the visitor can be tempted to explore beyond the sermon archive in to some other pages, they are  likely to encounter many opportunities to gain an understanding of  what our church stands for. The deeper and longer-term impacts of this casual encounter with our message are  hard to overestimate. It gets our name and ministry known in a  remarkably subtle way.

CHURCH OUTING TO BUXTON

We are off to Buxton on Saturday 12th May.  The plan is to meet in Buxton for 12 noon.  Buxton is easily accessible by train and by car and is a beautiful town in the Peak District.  There is plenty to do for everyone: The big attraction is Poole's Cavern - extensive limestone caves.  There are guided tours (about 45 mins long + 30 min intro video) every half hour, but disabled access is limited.  By the cavern is the Buxton Country Park for the more energetic, with a steepish climb up to Solomon's Temple - a folly on top of the hill.  If you want to go please let Elen know who will confirm arrangements for meeting up.

SMARTIE TUBE APPEAL NEWS

Thank you for your wonderful generosity.  The Smartie total has now risen to over £520!  A few people have said they still have some money to donate; please get this to us in the next couple of weeks.  We will stop collecting at Pentecost – any money that comes in after this will be put in the pot for next year’s collection!  With the tax back on this donation we should be able to give the Immigration Unit well over £600 for their valuable work with the most vulnerable members of our society.

ANDY'S MOVEMENTS THIS WEEK

Andy is in the office on Monday but takes a service at the police training college at lunchtime.  He is in the office on Tuesday morning and taking a wedding in Rotherham on Tuesday afternoon.  He is in the office all day on Thursday.  Andy is in court on Friday.  He takes Friday off.  You can leave messages for Andy via 0161 249 0649 or via email: revandy@mccmanchester.co.ukIn an emergency only you can call him on 07944 378049
