Spirituality Opportunities

This Week

Quiet and Calm Service

We meet at 8pm in the side room on Tuesday for our monthly Quiet and Calm service.  This is an intentionally quiet, reflective and meditative celebration of Holy Communion and has an opportunity for prayers of healing.  All are welcome.

Daily Devotional

We produce a daily prayer devotional which is given out each week in church.  It has a Psalm, prayer, reading, thought for the day and prayer suggestions for every day of the week.  It normally follows the themes we are looking at in our weekly sermons, but also usually has one reading from one of the saints commemorated by the world wide Church.

Prayer Requests

Did you know you can text and receive prayer requests to us.  All you need to do is to text your prayer request to us at: 07781 472445.  If you wish to receive prayer requests please text and tell us!

Birthdays This Month

Jo Mculloch’s birthday is on the 9th, Barbara Lungalang’s is on the 15th, Amanda Styles’ on the 29th and Iain Blackburn’s on the 31st

WELCOME

Welcome to this newsletter and to the ministry of MCC Manchester.  If this is your first contact with us, know that you are welcome.  You can take part in our ministry through visiting us as we worship each week or by using our resources on our website.  You can keep in touch with us through email, in person or by text.  It is our prayer that our people grow as committed disciples of the Lord Jesus.

TODAY'S SERMON

Today we looked at three women who encountered Jesus; the Syro-Phoenician woman, the woman caught in adultery and the poor widow.  Each encounter is about tables being turned; a situation being looked at from another point of view.  The gentile woman challenges and changes Jesus pushing him towards a warmer welcome and embrace of gentiles.  Jesus is being set up with the woman caught in adultery.  If he condemns her the crowds would not love him, if he forgives he would be accused of breaking the Law.  Instead he turns the tables on her accusers and they walk away.  The widow is used to show up the ostentatious displays of piety by the Pharisees.  We can learn from this as Jesus always turns the tables on our own expectations.

CHURCH LIBRARY OPEN

Some of you know that we have quite an extensive library of books in the office.  About half of these belong to Andy, a third are on long term loan to us and the rest belong to MCC Manchester.  We are not able to let people come and browse through this collection in person but we have now catalogued all the books and you can see – on line - what we have.  If you want to borrow any of these books just speak to Andy – we ask for a donation of £2 per book borrowed and will also ask for a deposit.   The catalogue is sub-divided into many categories and we have lots of different subject areas.  You can browse through the catalogue from our own website – simply go to the “Church Library” link near the bottom of our navigation bar.  Happy reading!

WHY WE ARE SUPPORTING THE GMIAU

This week we thought we would share some feedback from service users of the Immigration Aid Unit: A Somali client wrote, "I was completely disappointed when I approached five solicitors—all refused to take my case.  However the GMIAU caseworker gave me hope when she accepted my case.  Her determination to have this case succeed took me by surprise." This client’s family have now been given permission to join him in the UK.   A Gambian student wrote:  "Thank you very much once more for your professionalism and dedication for the course of justice for the freedom and liberation of the human race entangled with the complications and restrictions of immigration rules for movement and residence for a just cause for all." A mother from Cameroon wrote: "I didn’t know if I will get my children with we, but GMIAU wipe my tears and my caseworker did what she could and now I am with them."  A woman from Pakistan wrote:  "I would like to inform you that the entry clearance officer in Pakistan has given the visa to my husband. This would not have been possible without you."  The funds we raise for the GMIAU through our Smartie tube collection in Lent help work for justice and re-unite families.

THIS AND THAT

Last year we developed a special service for Holy Week based on the traditional Stations of the Cross liturgy familiar to Catholic and Anglican Christians.  We blended clips from Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ with music from Handel’s Messiah.  These clips were played and we had periods of silence as well as songs to create a contemporary meditation on the Way of the Cross.  MCC Bournemouth used this last year as well.  This year MCCs Brighton, Newcastle and Pretoria have asked for the resource (which has been improved) and MCC Bournemouth is using it again too!  Our next social is a meal together next week after church. We intend to go to the Tapas Bar in Beech Road – please let Ian or Elen know if you wish to come along so we know how big a table to book.   Please remember Revs Kermie and Glenna in your prayers as Kermie copes with her diagnosis of breast cancer.  Glenna, our Elder, has flown back to America to be with Kermie at this time.  Please also remember the Rev Mia Andersen of MCC Copenhagen in your prayers as she continues to recover from eye surgery.

THANKS

Thank you for your generosity the last week.  Our collection was £64 and 28 people were in worship.   Thank you too for the increased giving each month.  We are getting an extra £280 a month before tax (£388 after) thanks to 5 people increasing their giving and two new standing orders.  Another three people have asked for standing order forms too!  This means we should meet our budgetary targets for this year and continue to offer exciting life changing ministry to our community.
