This Week

Quiet and Calm

We meet at 8pm on Tuesday in the side chapel for our monthly Quiet and Calm service.  This is a chance to relax in God’s presence, feel the stress and strain of he day and the week ease away, meet the Lord in a simple celebration of Holy Communion and to be prayed for and anointed with Holy Oil.

Prayer Requests

Did you know you can text and receive prayer requests to us.  All you need to do is to text your prayer request to us at: 07781 472445.  If you wish to receive prayer requests please text and tell us!

Daily Devotional

We produce a daily prayer devotional which is given out each week in church.  It has a Psalm, prayer, reading, thought for the day and prayer suggestions for every day of the week.  It normally follows the themes we are looking at in our weekly sermons, but also usually has one reading from one of the saints commemorated by the world wide Church.

Sermons on Line

Missed church on Sunday?  Don’t worry, you can catch up with the sermon by going to our website, www.mccmanchester.co.uk and pressing the sermon button.  This means you don’t miss the weekly teaching designed to help us live as more faithful disciples of the Lord Jesus.  You can also download the weekly devotional booklet there too.

WELCOME

Welcome to this newsletter and to the ministry of MCC Manchester.  If this is your first contact with us, know that you are welcome.  You can take part in our ministry through visiting us as we worship each week or by using our resources on our website.  You can keep in touch with us through email, in person or by text.  It is our prayer that our people grow as committed disciples of the Lord Jesus.

TODAY'S SERMON

We continued our series looking at songs by Madonna and today looked at the song Oh Father.  We looked at forgiveness as both a blessing and a curse and what forgiveness might mean in the face of profound hurt.  It doesn’t mean forgetting or acting as if nothing had happened; instead it means not letting the bad experience or person control our lives anymore.

THANKS

Thank you for your generosity last week.  Last week 33 people attended worship and the collection was £75 on top of the £1500 or so that is sent by standing order to our bank each month.   62 people attended MCC Manchester at least once in August; last year just 41 people attended once or more in August.

COME AND SING DAY 3RD NOVEMBER

We are organising a “Come and Sing” day on Saturday 3rd November from 11am until 4pm.  This is a chance for us to improve our singing, learn some of the new songs we will be using over the next three months, and spend some quality time together.  It is designed for anyone – not just the choir!  If you have an inclination to join the choir, however, this is a good way to start!  If you want to come, please sign up at the back or let Philip or Neil know.

SOCIAL ACTION TEAM STARTING

Steve Gray is setting up a new social action group to co-ordinate the different areas of social action we involve ourselves in.  Over the years we have become good at sending letters to oppressive governments on behalf of Amnesty and taken part in the Christmas greeting card campaign that they organise.  We have also campaigned for Moses to stay in the UK.  Steve will be producing a monthly newsletter which will be sent to all those who sign up for this new ministry, the newsletter will some selected cases of prisoners on conscience or other areas where we can write letters to make a difference.  The newsletter will suggest a model for such letters.  Sometimes we think that writing letters is rather ineffective but a released prisoner of conscience from Vietnam wrote: We could always tell when international protests were taking place... the food rations increased and the beatings were fewer."  If you are interested in this please see Steve or email him via socialaction@mccmanchester.co.uk.

THIS AND THAT

We are always looking for more choir members and musicians.  If you would like to sing with us, the commitment is to get to church for 3pm and join in the pre-service choir practice where we run through the songs for that day.  We also arrange some “Come and Sing” Days where we learn new material.  We hope to organise one of these for early November – again this is a good time to come and try your voice out and see if you would like to join the choir.  Similarly we always are looking out for musicians – of any instrument – who would like to help deliver the musical aspects of worship.  If you are interested please see Philip, Andy or Neil.    Alma is involved in “Café Church” a fresh expression of the Free Churches in Chorlton.  It offers good food and conversation, creative activity and space to think, talk and pray.  It meets next on Wednesday between 8pm and 9.30pm at TomToms opposite Morrison’s.  All are welcome.   Advent is coming!  We are preparing for our Advent services already; we will use the same format as we have for the last two years with pre-recorded readings and reflections mixed with modern music to re-tell the Christmas and Advent themes.  These will be mixed with visual images too.  There will be three readings and reflections per service but no sermon.  As a result the services have a different feel and have been well received in the past.  Andy has chosen the readings and put the services together, Dan is busy sorting out music and we will be getting lots of different people to record their contributions over the next few weeks.  We hope to offer this resource to other MCCs again.

EMMAUS GROUP

8 people attended our first Emmaus group meeting last Thursday – with apologies from two people.  The group started to look at the theme of prayer using the Lord’s Prayer as a model.  It will meet every other week and the next meeting, at Gwen and Margaret’s home in Altrincham, takes place on 27th at 7.30pm.

ANDY’S MOVEMENTS THIS WEEK

Due to Ian’ recovery Andy will be working a lot of the time at home.  Please contact Andy, if you need to, via email or the church phone.  He will pick up messages each day.  You can contact Andy via 0161 249 0649 or on his email revandy@mccmanchester.co.uk
